OpenStreetMap. The Free Wiki World Map.

In some parts of the world, geographical data is not free. Inspired by sites like Wikipedia, OpenStreetMap set out to create a free editable map of the world. Initially, information was collected by volunteers using handheld GPS devices and a notebook.

GeoCommons is a user-friendly application that allows even the most non-technical of users to create and use maps and geo-analytics to make decisions and solve problems. They have taken the process that once took hours and significant overhead and streamlined it to the core capabilities that take minutes.

To the individual in poverty, the paths out are unknown. In this situation and alone, he/she can only try directions out. If he is repeatedly disappointed, he caves in. He cannot get out. In opposition, individuals can share their findings, coordinate their decisions and explore together their ways out.

Ushahidi, which means "testimony" in Swahili, is a website built in the aftermath of the Kenyan 2008 elections to map reports of violence.

HealthMap

HealthMap is a GIS mapping tool that uses Google Maps to track disease, infections, and outbreaks. HealthMap, like other mapping applications, uses a complex algorithm to crawl the web for news and reports with geo-referenced health information.
